After the recent public comments from the likes of Enzo Fernández and Marc Cucurella, Chelsea are said to be targeting a bit more experience in this summer’s transfer window, though it’s hard to imagine that we’d make any drastic changes to the master plan that we’ve defended at every turn and have kept our subscription to despite its obvious shortcomings. Does a tiger change its stripes? It seems just as likely that we’ll just continue doing what we’ve been doing for the past few years, and spend
big on potential rather than current ability.
Along those lines, the club have been linked with 18-year-old center back Karim Coulibaly of Werder Bremen. The youngster, in his first season, has been one of the few bright spots at Bremen this season, and they are apparently happy to cash in, especially should they end up being relegated from the Bundesliga (they are currently safe by three points). Reports in Germany claim that they are looking for a club record €40-50m.
Coulibaly has been linked with Real Madrid, Manchester United, and PSG (his dream club), but now Chelsea have also “entered the race” alongside the likes of Newcastle United and Napoli. So that’s solid work from the youngster’s agent, to create this much noise for a kid with 22 senior professional appearances. Now, if he could unearth some Brighton (or Manchester City youth) connections in the player’s past, he’s surely got himself a deal!
