Chelsea staggered to yet another toothless defeat on Saturday night, losing 1-0 to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Head coach Liam “Cannot Lie” Rosenior called our performance “dominant” and our defeat “impossible”, but sadly, the only thing we dominated were a few ultimately meaningless statistics and our defeat felt not only quite possible, but highly expected as well. In the Premier League alone, it’s now just one win in our last eight, with four defeats on the bounce and without scoring
even a single goal: 0-1, 0-3, 0-3, 0-1.
Somehow, we remain sixth in the table … though with a seven-point gap to fifth and with just five games remaining, we can probably safely call the top-five race over already. (If Aston Villa finish fifth but also win the Europa League, sixth place would also qualify for the Champions League, but otherwise, only the first five go.) In fact, the race now is avoid the mire and muck of midtable mediocrity: three points separate sixth from twelfth at the moment.

Brighton & Hove Albion team news: Brighton snatched a late equalizer in stoppage time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday to keep Spurs in the relegation zone, and extend their own good run of form to just one defeat in seven games (six wins). If they can keep that run going, they could yet at least match their best ever league finish (sixth).
A career-best season from Danny Welbeck at age 35 is powering their attack, though it’s mainly been their defense that’s set the tone: only the top two teams and Crystal Palace have conceded fewer.
Head coach Fabian Hürzeler does have a couple injuries to deal with it at the moment, including to key midfielder Diego Gómez, but Kaoru Mitoma has been passed fit. Adam Webster, Stefanos Tzimas, and Solly March are out long-term, while James Milner has been dealing with a minor knock since setting the record most Premier League appearances ever at 657.
Chelsea team news: Enzo Fernández and Trevoh Chalobah made their returns from suspension and injury, respectively, on Saturday, so that’s good news. But João Pedro was absent due to a knock and then Estêvão picked up an injury during the game, which is far from good news. JP could be back but it looks like a few weeks, at least, for the teenage winger. Those two have provided the rare sparks of creativity in our attack recently.
Of course, that attack hasn’t actually done anything for a while now. Combined with our inability to keep a clean sheet, it’s hardly a surprise that we seem utterly incapable of winning a game against non-lower league teams. Rosenior seems out of his depth entirely and has not had any useful answers, on or off the pitch. I’m sure he’s a fine coach, but not at this level, at least not yet.
“As a coach, you have to work to the data, you have to work to the process, because you believe your process works in the end. But in this moment where we are, we need to win a game of football. That’s the fundamental, that’s what this club demands, and in recent results, they haven’t been there. So data is one thing, and metrics and all of those things, but the most important statistic is the result, and we have to go after that tomorrow evening.”

Process the process!
Previously: Brighton have been a bit of a bogey team in recent years, and they’ve won three in a row against us in all competitions, including 3-1 earlier this season at the Bridge — all three of their goals coming in the final 15 minutes after Chalobah got sent off early in the second half.
