The Michigan men’s basketball team jumped one spot in the AP Poll and is now ranked No. 6 in the country.
This new ranking comes one week after Michigan’s lone game last week, a blowout win of epic proportions
against Oakland. Michigan’s sheer domination in that 121-78 victory looks a lot better since No. 2 Purdue struggled at home against the Golden Grizzlies and only won by 10 points.
The men’s poll has a new No. 1 team in Houston, followed by Purdue, UConn, Duke and Arizona to round out the Top-5. Michigan is the second-highest ranked Big Ten team and is ahead of Illinois (No. 14), UCLA (No. 15), Michigan State (No. 17) and Wisconsin (No. 24) in the conference.
The women’s team also moved one spot in the AP Poll, albeit in the wrong direction. After a 60-point win over Canisius and a 29-point win over Harvard, the Wolverines dropped to No. 14 in the AP Poll and is now behind UCLA (No. 3), USC (No. 8), and Maryland (No. 9) in the Big Ten. Michigan is ahead of Iowa (No. 21) and Michigan State (No. 24) in the conference.
Both the men’s and women’s teams play in Detroit this week. The men’s team plays Wake Forest — hoping to avenge the first loss of the Dusty May era — at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 11 (6:30 p.m., FS1) before traveling to TCU to take on the Horned Frogs (9 p.m., ESPN2) on Friday. If Michigan wins both those games handily, a Top-5 ranking isn’t out of the question.
The women’s team also has a revenge game coming up, with its sole game of the week being against No. 15 Notre Dame, the team that beat them in the Round of 32 last season. That game will also be played at LCA as a part of the Shamrock Classic and will air on NBC at 4 p.m. EST this Saturday. This is a great national TV opportunity for the Wolverines to earn some respect against Niele Ivey’s squad.
