At this point in the Pittsburgh Steelers offseason, all eyes seem to be on cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and his contract situation. The 2023 second-round pick is due for an extension that will likely pay him in the neighborhood of $30 million per season. However, we have no reports that suggest that a deal is close to being done just a few weeks away from training camp.
Porter Jr. has never been shy about his confidence in his abilities, and one of his most recent comments on Instagram shows that he
feels he is being disrespected by the league.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler began rolling out his positional rankings this past week. The rankings involve Fowler surveying a number of front office personnel and coaches from around the league to give us an opportunity to see how people inside the league view these players. As we know now, Porter Jr. was not included in the top 10, but was listed as an honorable mention.
Porter left a reply under the post simply reading, “It gets to a point.”
While Porter Jr. likely should have been included in the top 10, this list could give us some insight into how people around the league view him. The coaches and front office personnel who make up this list don’t view Porter Jr. as a top 10 corner in the league, so maybe the Steelers feel the same.
It would make sense for the Steelers to get a deal done with Porter Jr. before the season starts. Standout corners Christian Gonzalez of the New England Patriots and Devon Witherspoon of the Seattle Seahawks were also drafted in 2023 and are up for contract extensions. Both are much more highly thought of in league circles if we consider this list, and both could reasonably command becoming the highest paid corner in the NFL.
