More Winning
Winning is something that has been hard to come by in Utica in recent years. Not this season. The Comets led by Lenni Hameenaho’s hot start (5 points, 3 goals) swept back to back games over the weekend to rocket to the top of the standings with a 3-0 start.
On Saturday, Jakub Malek would win the goalie duel with Rochester’s Mathew Villalta 2-1 for his first win of the season. Malek stopped 23 of 24 and earned third star honors.
Hameenaho would open up the scoring for the Comets with this blast from
an excellent feed by Matyas Melovsky, who has three assists to start the season.
Center Marc McLaughlin would score the game winner with the help of the first Utica point of Eamon Powell. Stefan Noesen made his Comets debut with Colin White and Riley Tufte, but the line did not score in the game.
On Sunday, the Comets faced off against Belleville and it was the Lenni Hameenaho show.
That’s two power play goals and a short-handed assist for Hameenaho in the game. Hameenaho has earned a point in five of the Comets first eight goals of the season. Shane LaChance also scored his first goal of the year on Sunday. Riley Tufte and Zach Gallant earned their first points as Comets with an assist each. Lastly, Topias Vilen assisted on both power play goals giving him a point per game to start the season. It was a good weekend.
Around the Pool:
- Good results so far for Devils prospects out of St. Thomas to start the NCAA season. Both defensemen Chase Cheslock and forward David Rozsival have a goal and an apple to start the year. Here’s a look at Cheslock’s goal.
- Second round pick Matias Vanhanen starting strong for Boston College.
- Lastly, Goaltender Daniil Rusakovich really needs a promotion out of the MHL.
