Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curaçao was exactly the type of performance fans hoped to see from Julian Nagelsmann’s side, but the bigger question is whether it actually changes expectations for the rest of the World Cup.
On one hand, the result showcased many of Germany’s strengths. The attack looked sharp, the movement was fluid, and the team displayed the kind of ruthlessness that has often been missing in recent major tournaments. Scoring seven goals in a World Cup match is an impressive achievement
regardless of the opponent, and it should provide a significant confidence boost heading into tougher tests.
At the same time, perspective is important. Curaçao entered the tournament as one of the least experienced teams in the field, and Germany was expected to control the match from start to finish. The performance answered some questions about Germany’s ability to break down a defensive opponent, but it did not necessarily answer the bigger questions about how the team will fare against elite competition.
The real measuring stick will come in the upcoming matches against stronger opponents. Germany’s attack appears capable of carrying the team deep into the tournament, but concerns about consistency, squad depth, and handling pressure in knockout matches have not completely disappeared.
As a result, the victory probably should not dramatically alter expectations. What it does provide is evidence that Germany has the talent and momentum to make a serious run. Whether that translates into a quarterfinal appearance, a semifinal berth, or something even bigger remains to be seen.
