The Kansas City Chiefs will navigate this offseason with uncertainty of when star quarterback Patrick Mahomes will return to the field after a late season torn ACL. With incumbent backup passer Gardner Minshew having signed with the Arizona Cardinals last week, a looming question after free agency’s first wave was who would the team bring in behind Mahomes.
We now know the answer.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs and the New York Jets have agreed on a trade that will send quarterback Justin Fields to Kansas City. Schefter adds that Fields specifically chose Kansas City over other interested teams.
The insider later reported that Kansas City will be sending New York a sixth-round selection in the 2027 NFL draft as compensation for Fields.
The Chicago Bears took Fields out of Ohio State with the 11th overall selection of the 2021 NFL Draft. After three seasons with the Bears, Fields played in 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers before joining New York last season. For his career, Fields has totaled 9039 passing yards with 52 touchdowns and 32 interceptions in 59 career game appearances.
The dual threat Fields has also added 2892 rushing yards with 23 more touchdowns coming on the ground.
