Maximilian Eberl, the executive board member for sport at Bayern Munich is set for an extension beyond 2027 when his current contract expires. However, Uli Hoeneß first apologized to Eberl for his regretful remark ahead of the DFB Pokal.
After one of the best season’s for Bayern in recent times, the question of continuing with of the most important members who set the direction and recruit squad members was popped to the club’s honorary President. Uli being Uli gave a blunt answer saying it would
be a 60-40 call in favor of an extension. With the Pokal final still to be played, it came off to some as distasteful and premature. Importantly, it came as a shock to Eberl himself and here is an excerpt from a previous article that captures his reaction.
“I was very surprised by that. I want to do my job, I want to convince people with my work. What we’ve achieved this season, as a team, as a club – that speaks for itself. You can have doubts, that’s perfectly legitimate. Then we can talk about it. The numbers are there. It doesn’t matter to me right now, we’ve had a very good season with the double. We actually talk about it all the time, we talked yesterday, we talked today. That’s why the 60-40 (chances of an extension) was surprising to me,” Eberl admitted (again captured by @iMiaSanMia), before going on to critique the timing of Hoeneß‘s interview.
“I actually developed a thick skin. But I didn’t think it was the right time to do that today on a final day. The nice thing is: it didn’t affect the team in the slightest. We’re a united group that simply wants to play football, that simply wants to be successful. The team did that brilliantly again today.”
Making it right
Following the pre-season friendly, Uli opened up about the remark on Eberl. Regretting his actions, he revealed he personally apologized to Eberl and set things right. “First of all, I have to say that I was incredibly annoyed with myself. That was naïve. I thought the statements would be published the following week, but they were already made public on Saturday morning. And that meant Max wasn’t treated well by me before the Pokal match, I apologized to him,” said Hoeneß (Sport1 via @iMiaSanMia).
The current chances?
After Uli’s reveal, he was questioned once again whether Eberl’s chances of staying at the club have since gone up. The honorary President and supervisory board member gave a huge affirmation as he answered “For now 100%” (Az’s Maximilian Koch).
So there you have it, this should mean that the club’s sporting direction will be under Eberl’s charge beyond 2027. So far, under him, Christoph Freund and Vincent Kompany, the club’s culture and locker room spirit have been in a good place. The results have followed suit with a domestic double and a semi-final finish in the Champions League. With exciting signings in Luis Diaz, Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari, Eberl has addressed both short term and long term needs for the squad.
