49ers overreactions: Has Mac Jones put Brock Purdy’s QB1 job in jeopardy?
“That term dates back to September 2009 — the first documented mention of GPS Game. It’s defined as a pivotal game that provides an “exact location of where team(s) rank(s).”
The 49ers are 2-0 after two road victories. The Arizona Cardinals are 2-0. They beat the 49ers twice last season. There is a good chance the winner of this game will take sole possession of first place in the NFC West with the Los Angeles Rams kicking off
earlier in the day at the Philadelphia Eagles.
So, yes, let’s break out the #GPSGame designation for this one.“
49ers game review: Defense made Spencer Rattler look even better than ‘pretty good’ (paywall)
“ Linebacker Fred Warner set up pass rusher Bryce Huff’s game-sealing strip sack with a brilliant play on the snap preceding it: Warner had a pass breakup while locked in 1-on-1 coverage on Johnson 10 yards downfield on 3rd-and-2.
It was part of another All-Pro effort from Warner, who had a team-high 11 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Yes, Warner does it all. Consider: On the game’s second snap, Saints right tackle Taliese Fuaga drew an illegal man-down penalty and Warner began pointing at Fuaga, letting the officials know about the infraction, as he dropped in coverage.“

Could Mike McDaniel, if fired by the Dolphins, return to the 49ers? Mailbag (paywall)
“Kyle Juszczyk, George Kittle, Trent Williams and the rest of the run-game players would be strongly in favor of a reunion. Juszczyk used to gush about the creativity of the 49ers’ run-game plans when McDaniel was in charge of crafting them.
Shanahan would be all for it, too. McDaniel had been his longest-serving lieutenant when he went to Miami, and Shanahan has noted that none of his assistants know his system’s passing game and run game as deeply as McDaniel does.
The question is whether McDaniel would want to come back. You can have the title of offensive coordinator under Shanahan, but not the traditional duties of an offensive coordinator. McDaniel might have more license elsewhere, should he be cast out of Miami.“
Takeaways from the tape: Connor Colby a revelation, Saleh’s cooking + more
“But physically, Puni is clearly compromised with that knee injury. He graded out fairly low (and those grades are coming tomorrow). Keep an eye on him and Trent going forward.
Holy **** was I wrong about (A) Connor Colby as a player, and (B) my initial impressions of Alfred Collins’ game on Sunday. I thought Colby was going to be terrible. I mean it. I was very harsh in my pre-draft review. I can blame Iowa, but I saw the athleticism, got excited, and the tape just… looked awful. He didn’t seem confident, was sloppy, unable to conistently anchor, and run game coordinator/O-Line coach Chris Foerster didn’t even deny that. But Colby was genuinely outstanding in his first, mostly full game. I’ll even show you how quick he compensated for a rookie mistake. On the first play below, he’s supposed to pass his man off to Trent Williams, then reset and pick up the looper. He doesn’t, and there’s a free rusher to Mac Jones.“
