The history of being a Cleveland Browns fan has been a difficult one. The team’s history includes a ton of winning, but the gut punches started and haven’t stopped, especially The Betrayal in 1995. Browns fans have persisted through horrible seasons, bad decisions, an owner, front office, and coaching changes, a winless season, and many more embarrassments.
The Dawg Pound is a uniquely amazing fanbase, whether they were born into the team or adopted it. Time and time again, we have gotten a chance
to hear and read stories from fans here at DBN about how they became fans, and players that hooked them on Cleveland football.
The Athletic surveyed a number of NFL fans to understand their experiences. Unsurprisingly, Browns fans had some deep and funny responses, which make sense given the team’s failures in this century:
The quotes in the piece were very fitting a fanbase that has endured that much losing:
“Being a Browns fan is watching a horrible movie that you’ve already seen 50 times, because you hold onto the hope the studio filmed an alternate ending.” — Todd B.
“Like trying to recover from a hangover and stepping on your kids’ Lego blocks.” — Tom P.
“Imagine you’re a carpenter by trade. Every day, you go to work and swing a hammer, and 95 percent of the time, you hit your thumb.” — Dave T.
“It’s like being the kid in school who never gets invited to the cool party. Every year, you tell yourself, ‘This is the year it finally happens.’ You change your look, style and taste in music. Read books on how to make friends, learn some jokes, etc. Nothing works.
“You used to be invited all the time, before your school was unceremoniously moved to Baltimore and you had to attend the new school rebuilt on a bad foundation. But now you’re stuck there, and you’ve gone through 42 wingmen.
“But hey, this year is absolutely THE YEAR.” — Corey E.
As always, Browns fans find hope again in HC Todd Monken, two straight draft classes full of talented players, and the start of offseason programming. Will the 2026 season be another year of stepping on Legos, hitting your thumb with a hammer, and not getting invited to the cool party? Only time will tell.
What is your analogy for what being a Browns fan has been like this century?
