The Guardians managed to split a doubleheader yesterday, and win another series against a good team in the Chicago Cubs.
Nicole had your recap of a game one loss here. Tantalizingly close to a series sweep. Game two featured Parker Messick for five innings of one run ball, six K’s, two hits and three walks. Messick is looking like a reliable force in the rotation. Matt Festa, Shawn Armstrong and Cade Smith gave up the other four runs, which isn’t ideal. Only Erik Sabrowski was able to escape unscathed.
Smith threw 33 pitches (walking two Cubs) so he won’t be available tonight.
Offensively, CJ Kayfus, Gabriel Arias and Austin Hedges were the stars. Of course.
Kayfus popped this home run:
Arias twice came up with key RBI hits:
Hedges even added the decisive insurance run with an RBI single. It is nice to get these wins while Jose, Kwan and Manzardo have yet to get going.
Tonight, Jose Ramirez will set the record for most games played in a Cleveland uniform at 1,620. We need to show up despite the cold. Zack Meisel of the Athletic has a review of how José got there.
AROUND MLB:
The White Sox won sweeping the Blue Jays, but the Royals, Twins and Tigers all lost.
It’s early but the panic setting in for Red Sox fans is funny to see.
