Newcastle United’s midfield rebuild may not end with the arrival of Manchester City’s Nico Gonzalez, with the Magpies continuing to assess further options heading into the Sept. 1 transfer deadline.
Matthias Jaissle has already lost Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali this summer, while Joe Willock could also depart amid interest from Besiktas. Newcastle has consequently spent recent weeks exploring several midfielders, Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall among them, but now another Spurs player has apparently
entered the Magpies’ radar.
The Daily Mail (h/t DeadlineDaylive) reported that Newcastle has renewed its interest in Tottenham midfielder Archie Gray, with the 20-year-old admired in part because of his ability to operate across several positions.
Gray joined Tottenham from Leeds United for £40 million (€46 million) and has accumulated 81 appearances for Spurs, featuring in central midfield, at center back and at right back. His versatility is particularly attractive to Newcastle, although his natural position remains in midfield.
Any deal, however, would seemingly require a substantial investment. While Gray’s market value sits at €35 million, the Daily Mail reported that Tottenham values Gray at more than £60 million (€69 million) and considers him part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans.
Spurs, however, have spent heavily this summer — €267 million and counting — and should definitely be interested in raising funds through additional sales, though the report indicates Gray is not among the players Tottenham would prefer to sell.
Gray’s standing at Tottenham was reinforced during the summer when he captained the team in preseason, and he also wore the armband in Spurs’ Premier League opener against Brentford. Despite that responsibility, the England Under-21 international has yet to establish himself consistently in his preferred midfield role.
With Gonzalez now seemingly Newcastle’s leading immediate midfield target, there is no urgency for Newcastle to pursue Gray in any rushed way or overspend on him just for the sake of it.
