Ever since he officially arrived from Atlético Madrid in January 2023, and despite being barred to play for a multiple months beforehand, Javier Fernández has been tipped as one of the most likely candidates to break into the first team. His mix of leadership, quality on the ball and tenacity in midfield brought him a lot of credit and saw him picked as one of new head coach Vincent Kompany’s five preferred youth players for the 2024 pre-season in Seoul. Fernández will have been looking to take the momentum
from this inclusion to have a great season, but injuries struck. A long term injury quickly ruled him out until January 2025, he was then rushed back to the pitch and promptly injured again. This latest injury has seen him take nearly the entire year to return. But he has been in team training for nearly a month now and is nearing a return to action in November. Sky reporter Kerry Hau captured the situation, via @iMiaSanMia_GER:
Javier Fernández has been injured for a long time and is now back with the U-23s. He is one who could perhaps make the jump to the senior team in the future.
A breakthrough to the first team remains unlikely, unfortunately. Not only have these injuries robbed the Spaniard of about an entire year of football, his contract is set to end in 2026 and there have been murmurs that Bayern are struggling to convince the youngster to renew.
