In a twist that sent shockwaves through NFL discourse on Monday, ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky floated an idea that wasn’t on my radar: the Pittsburgh Steelers should be “brainstorming” how to acquire Bengals star quarterback Joe Burrow.
“It would shock me if three teams weren’t on the phone today after what he said yesterday, figuring out, ”how do we make him part of our football team… Jets, Raiders, Steelers…“
The suggestion came less than 24 hours after Burrow delivered a surprisingly introspective media session—one that immediately fueled speculation about his long-term football future.
Burrow, who has battled multiple injuries throughout his young career, spoke openly about the toll the game has taken.
“If I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing it,” Burrow said. “I’ve been through a lot. If I’m not having fun, what am I doing it for?”
The comments echoed sentiments similar to those expressed by Andrew Luck, whose sudden retirement in 2019 remains one of the most shocking moments in modern NFL history. Orlovsky leaned into that comparison on air, suggesting that Burrow could reevaluate his situation if Cincinnati’s struggles continue.
Since Ben Roethlisberger retired, the Steelers have been on a winding, often frustrating quest for their next franchise quarterback. Kenny Pickett flashed but ultimately faltered. Mason Rudolph steadied the ship at times. Russell Wilson gave the team credibility but not certainty.
The Steelers have plenty of talent, but the missing piece has remained painfully obvious.
Enter Orlovsky’s hypothetical.
Could this actually happen? Realistically, No. Burrow is the face of the Bengals organization, the cornerstone of everything Cincinnati has built. He is signed long-term, adored by fans, and entrenched in the AFC North rivalry.
That said, the NFL is unpredictable, and Orlovsky’s idea—bold as it was—hinges on one possibility: Joe Burrow, deciding he wants out.
If that ever occurred, every quarterback-needy team in football would line up. The Steelers would certainly be among them. A talent of Burrow’s caliber instantly transforms a franchise, resets expectations, and changes championship timelines.
The idea of Burrow in Pittsburgh is almost unthinkable given the rivalry, history, and contractual obstacles. But, the NFL thrives on “what if?” scenarios, and Orlovsky’s comments lit the fuse on a conversation that won’t fade quickly—especially with Burrow sounding more reflective than ever.
If the Bengals’ star ever forces his way out, the Steelers would be foolish not to sprint to the front of the line. Until then, the speculation will remain just that: off-the-wall, unlikely, but undeniably intriguing.
