On Wednesday, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch was on the record
talking about about Alphonso Davies being ready to play.He lied.
In an effort throw Switzerland a scare, Marsch pretended Davies was going to play, but never really intended on playing him.
“Alphonso was never going to play today. He wasn’t ready yet. I was using him a little bit as a decoy. I wanted Switzerland to have to think about him. He will be ready for the next match,” Marsch said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
It is one thing to
play coy or evade the question, but Marsch said: “The good news is he’s looking great, he’s in training, he looks great, he looks fit, he looks ready to go, excited. So, let’s see how things go, but I expect him to play.”
A day later — after a 2-1 loss — that comes across as a little “High School Harry” for the Canada boss.
Regardless, Davies not being available does raise questions for Bayern Munich fans hoping to see him healthy. In some ways, it is good that Canada is not rolling Davies out there when he is hurt, but in another respect, it has been a long time since Davies played a game.
That is a bit concerning.
