Recently, I wrote that promotion, a top-seven finish and European qualification had not changed Sunderland’s identity. A proper club then, a proper club now. They had simply given Sunderland a bigger stage on which to be Sunderland.
Now we’re about to find out if that’s true. For the first time in fifty-three years, Sunderland will take their place in European competition. Fifty-three years.
Long enough for supporters who watched our last European football to become grandparents. Long enough for children
to grow up, have families of their own and never once see Sunderland play outside of England.
Admittedly, some of us have sampled a version of European football in the meantime. This writer still remembers watching Nyron Nosworthy score in a pre-season friendly in Portugal, although I suspect UEFA won’t be counting it.
That figure struck me when I first thought about writing this piece. Fifty-three years is more than a football statistic. It’s a lifetime.
There will be supporters watching Sunderland in Europe this season whose parents never saw it. There will be sons and daughters carrying stories handed down by grandparents who did. There will be families where the mantle has passed through multiple generations, sustained not by success, but by loyalty. I go to matches with my family, and my uncle was there when Sunderland last qualified for Europe in 1973. Fifty-three years later, he will finally get the European adventure that generation spent a lifetime waiting to see return.
I often think about how many Sunderland supporters spent decades waiting for European football to return and never got to see it. This season, their sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters will take their place in the stands instead. This season, it moves all the way into Europe.
Not so long ago, we were wondering if Sunderland would ever escape League One. We endured play-off heartbreak, false dawns and years spent looking enviously at clubs we felt should never have left us behind. The thought of European football felt less like a realistic ambition and more like something from another era. I used to joke with my brother about Sunderland making the Champions League whenever he was trudging home from a dismal draw away at Accrington Stanley. It isn’t much of a joke now. It’s an outright possibility.
Now supporters find themselves comparing flight prices, discussing away allocations and scanning maps of cities that many never imagined Sunderland would visit. The same brother I mentioned has already booked 28 August off work, the day the European fixtures are released, so he can get flights sorted. Unfortunately for our sister, it also happens to be her 30th birthday.
It’s giving less Hartshead Services, more flights to Hoffenheim.
The temptation is to think that Europe changes everything.
The games are bigger. The spotlight is brighter. The opposition are more glamorous. Instead of long coach journeys to away grounds in England, supporters will be navigating airports, ferry terminals and train stations across the continent. But when I think about it, none of that really feels new.
Nobody follows Sunderland because it’s convenient. Europe simply gives supporters an entirely new set of inconvenient choices.
The supporter looking at flights to Europe is often the same supporter who travelled across the country to watch a League One fixture on a wet Tuesday night. The supporter booking annual leave for a continental away day is often the same supporter who spent years travelling in hope rather than expectation. The destination may have changed. The commitment hasn’t. That, for me, is what makes this season so fascinating.
Sunderland supporters spent years focused on recovery. Every season felt like a step back towards where we believed the club belonged. Europe changes the conversation entirely. For the first time in a generation, this isn’t about reclaiming something we’ve lost. It’s about exploring something many of us have never known.
The fixtures will be unfamiliar. The destinations will be unfamiliar. For many supporters, the entire experience will be unfamiliar. Yet I suspect the response won’t be. Sunderland supporters have always found ways to follow the club wherever it leads them. Europe simply extends the map.
For most Sunderland supporters, European football exists only in stories. I know it largely through conversations with older relatives, faded photographs and references to a Sunderland that feels almost mythical now.
Not anymore. This season, those stories become lived experiences. Supporters who grew up hearing about Europe from parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts will finally get the chance to make memories of their own. New names, new grounds and new adventures will be added to a story that has been waiting more than half a century for its next chapter.
The city still lives and breathes the football club. Defeats still ruin weekends and victories still transform them. The relationship between Sunderland and its supporters remains every bit as intense as it was when promotion felt impossibly distant.
European football hasn’t created that bond. It has simply given it a larger audience. And maybe that’s the most fitting part of all.
When Sunderland walk out in Europe this season, they won’t just be representing a football club. They’ll be carrying decades of memories, disappointments and dreams. They’ll be carrying supporters who never got to see this moment, and supporters who waited a lifetime for it to return.
In the factories where we used to make the glass, there are now grandchildren preparing for European away days their grandparents could only dream of.
The stage is bigger than it’s been for more than half a century, but one thing remains unchanged.
Wherever we go, Sunderland take over. Everywhere we go.
