The Mariners won last night. I didn’t watch it. I haven’t watched them in a while. They let me down this year. It’s not the first time they’ve done that, but it’s definitely the worst. I’ve seen that writing on the wall before, and I didn’t watch these last few games because I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I didn’t want to.
But I’ll be watching today. I’ll be watching for the guys on the field, who tried this year, even if the results don’t show it. I’ll be watching and listening for Rick, whose
career ends a little sooner than he might’ve liked, but no less the sweeter. And I’ll be watching for myself. They hurt me, but they could only do that because I love them. I’ll be watching because I want to.
Logan Gilbert takes the mound, and Rick takes the mic one last time in game 162 at 12:10 PST. Go Mariners.
In Mariners news…
- Kade Anderson exited early from last night’s game after taking 104 mph off his pitching arm, but thankfully it appears the contact missed any bone as x-rays came back negative and he just has some bruising.
- It has been an incredible season for custom chest protectors, and Cal has one more for us this weekend.
- Josh Naylor made history last night!
- Julio opened up about his season, his concussion, and what he wishes he’d done differently.
- The Seattle Chapter of the BBWAA announced their award recipients on Friday. Randy Arozarena was named the team MVP, Logan Gilbert earned Most Valuable Pitcher, and Cal Raleigh took home the Larry Stone Good Guy Award.
Around the league…
- Justin Verlander’s career brought a lot of misery to Mariners fans over the years, but it is important to watch this clip and remember that this is what it’s all about. Congrats JV on a hell of a career.
- Much of the focus was on the end of Justin Verlander’s career, but he wasn’t the only pitcher in this game who was pitching for the last time. Kirby Yates took the start opposite Verlander for the first time in his 12 year career, throwing 1.2 innings as his last act before calling it a career. This made yesterday only the third time in MLB history that both starting pitchers were pitching in the regular season for the last time.
- The Phillies need to win to guarantee a playoff appearance and they are bringing in reinforcements. Jesús Luzardo is being activated before today’s game and will be available out of the bullpen against the Rays.
- The Brewers voted to make Christian Yelich the franchise’s first ever official team captain yesterday, an honor Yelich said he would only accept if Robin Yount gave his blessing, which he emphatically gave.
Nick’s pick…
- If I was the guy in this photo, I’d get it blown up onto a 12’x15’ canvas and hang three of them in different rooms in my house. You wouldn’t be able to tell me a damn thing ever.
