Wednesday evening the Seattle Seahawks are set to defend their Super Bowl crown against the very same team they defeated to earn that title back in February when they face off against the New England Patriots in the season opening game for the NFL.
There will certainly be changes to the roster for the Seahawks after the offseason saw safety Coby Bryant sign with the Chicago Bears and cornerback Riq Woolen depart for the green of the Philadelphia Eagles. Fans had hoped that the players the Hawks drafted
in the second and third rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft, Bud Clark and Julian Neal, could fill a lot of the snaps lost, but Clark will spend the year on injured reserve and Neal was limited enough by injuries during training camp that he is unlikely to play a significant role, at least early in the season.
So, with that being the case, the fact that Ty Okada was ruled out after not practicing this week has left the secondary thin, and thus the Seahawks have turned to the practice squad to address the need for extra depth in the back end of the defense.
A.J. Finley has been with the Seahawks since Mike Macdonald arrived after spending the prior two seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, and is now on the active roster. Meanwhile Rodney Thomas and Velus Jones were both elevated from the practice squad. Thomas is a veteran who was signed as a free agent in the spring after having spent the first four years of his career with the Indianapolis Colts, and it appears Jones will reprise the special teams role he played down the stretch for Seattle in 2025.
To make room on the roster Seattle has waived Bryce Cabeldue, alum of the might Kansas Jayhawks, which means the 2026 Seahawks season is doomed.
