Well, this is a surprise.
Since joining from Liverpool FC last summer, Luis Díaz has been on an incredible run of form for Bayern Munich. Most fans, however, put his teammates Harry Kane and Michael Olise ahead in the Ballon d’Or rankings. James Rodríguez, himself a former FC Bayern star (albeit briefly) has a different take:
James Rodríguez: “Luis Díaz for the Ballon d’Or? Of course, why not? For me he’s currently in the top 5. He’s had a unique season. If he makes it to the big final and we end up as champions, then Lucho Ballon d’Or, why not?” [@DSports]
It’s a little bit unconventional, especially since Colombia are far from favorites at the World Cup. However, James does indeed draw attention to the fact that Díaz has had an absolutely incredible season a the club level this year, and potentially deserves more recognition for it. If he didn’t play alongside megastars like Kane and Olise, perhaps conversations about him would be different.
