Triple-A: Norfolk Tides @ Scranton/WB Railriders (NYY) – PPD
The Tides and Railriders were rained out and will make up the game in a doubleheader today.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 5, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NYM) 3
Sebastian Gongora delivered a strong start to lead the Baysox to their fourth consecutive win. Hey, the Orioles should try that! Gongora allowed a single run in the first and a single run in the fourth on his way to a six-inning, two-run effort. He allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out six. Over his last four starts, Gongora has allowed just four runs and has pitched into the sixth inning twice.
Tavian
Josenburger got the Baysox on the board in the third inning with some small ball. He walked, stole second (his 24th), went to third on an error, and scored on a groundout. Later in the game, Josenburger doubled in a run. That was the Baysox only extra-base hit.
Aron Estrada and Ethan Anderson both singled and walked in the game. Estrada brought his OBP up to .326, which is getting respectable. Anderson is OPS’ing .886. Frederick Bencosme was the only player with two hits.
High-A: Frederick Keys 10, Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 8
It was a real barn burner in Frederick, where the Keys fell behind, then took a six-run lead, then blew that six-run lead, then went ahead for good in the bottom of the eighth. They had nine hits, four of which were home runs, and walked a whopping 11 times.
Boston Bateman started the game and after allowing two runs in the first inning on a homer and a passed ball, settled in to pitch four innings with six strikeouts. In innings two through four, Batemen walked two and hit a batter, but did not allow another hit.
Ike Irish got the Keys’ scoring started with an RBI double, his only hit of the day. Colin Tuft and Yasmil Bucce homered in the third inning, then Wehiwa Aloy was in the middle of run-scoring plays in both the fourth and fifth innings. First, he walked, stole a base, and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Then, he singled in the team’s eighth run.
That gave the team an 8-2 lead, but reliever pitcher Carson Dorsey blew the entire lead over 3.1 innings. But solo homers from Vance Honeycutt and Randal Diaz in the eighth put the Keys ahead for good.
Every batter in the starting lineup except Colin Yeaman had exactly one hit. Yeaman walked twice. Tuft walked thrice. Irish and Bucce were the only starters not to take at least one walk.
Low-A: Charleson RiverDogs (TBR) 13, Delmarva Shorebirds 6
It was a night to forget for starting pitcher Stephen Still, who allowed 11 runs in just two innings to raise his ERA from 3.68 to 6.32. After giving up six runs in the first, they sent him back out to give up five in the second.
Obviously, once your team is down 11-0 after two innings, there is little your offense can do to turn things around. But the Shorebirds fought back to put a respectable six runs on the board. Jose Perez knocked in three runs on a single and two sac flies. Jordan Sanchez was hitless in the game but knocked in one via groundout. And DJ Layton had a two-RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. Jaiden Lo Re had the team’s only multi-hit game. Stiven Martinez was 1-for-5.
