Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez came face-to-face earlier today (Fri., Aug. 21, 2026) at the conclusion of the weigh ins ahead of their WBA Welterweight title fight this Saturday (Aug. 22. 2026) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, streaming live on DAZN PPV.
Romero is looking to defend his title for the first time after beating Ryan Garcia in May 2025 in New York City (see it again here). Currently on a two-fight win streak, Romero currently holds a record of 17-2 with 13 knockouts on his resume
and wants to make an emphatic statement against a man he once trained with.
As for Lopez — the former WBO and The Ring Light Welterweight champion — he aims to secure a big win and a title after coming up short against Shakur Stevenson in his last outing. Romero and Lopez were very close friends at one point, and while their is mutual respect between them, the friendship seems to be put on hold for the time being.
“It disappeared the moment we signed the contract,” Lopez said of their friendship. “He didn’t need to take it, especially after the layoff he’s had. The fact that he took the fight means he truly believes he can beat me. I take that as an insult to myself.”
