UEFA likes money. That much is very clear. The new expanded formats of the Champions League and Europa League see the organization’s revenue grow already. But there is always more money to be had. Having seen FIFA expand their Club World Cup into a massive, bloated event that brought them a lot more money, UEFA have reportedly decided expand yet another tournament. According to Telefootball, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, the next competition UEFA are considering expanding is the UEFA Super Cup:
The
UEFA Super Cup could be turned into a four-team tournament before the start of the season. It raises the prospect of it being taken outside of Europe with the United States or the Middle East being a likely destination. It would involve four clubs, two semi-finals and a final, although no further detail was offered as to who would qualify beyond, presumably, the two winners of the Champions League and Europa League.
BFW Analysis
It is not hard to draw parallels between this rumored expansion and the expansion of the Spanish Super Cup. For nearly forty years, the Spanish Super Cup was a two team event between the league winners and cup winners held in a stadium in Spain, the Spanish equivalent to the DFL Super Cup in Germany (the one Bayern Munich will play against VFB Stuttgart to win on Saturday…which, importantly, will take place in Germany). In 2020, however, it was expanded into a four team format and held outside of Spain four of the past 5 times. In 2025, the tournament took place in Saudi Arabia. It would not be surprising if UEFA saw the success of expanding the tournament and relocating it before coming to the conclusion that they should do the same.
The reason for the expansion and relocation, of course, is money. Both with the Spanish Super Cup and this rumored UEFA Super Cup expansion. To create more games and get more money from the United States and/or the Middle East. It is yet another step towards robbing the fans of enjoying the game in order to bring more money in and line the pockets of the rich men in charge of football. What a shame.
