There have been some great games in this year’s NCAA Tournament, and some thrilling buzzer beaters, notably Kentucky’s win over Santa Clara.
There is always heartbreak too, and nothing is much more heartbreaking than what happened to Vanderbilt Saturday.
The Commodores were down 74-72 as time was running out. Tyler Tanner got close to half court and just let his shot fly. It was true, too, and went into the rim…and then out again.
There is a phenomenal photo of the ball in the rim where the rim looks
like the rings of Saturn, and the clock was at 0:00. That ball had to go in.
But it didn’t.
We saw the photo but can’t find it now. But we found another that’s almost as interesting, because Tanner, as it turns out, has been here before.
Can you imagine?
Naturally, a lot of people saw this play and immediately thought of Butler and Gordon Hayward’s spectacular miss in 2010.
It was a miss on that level. People will what-if it forever.
