You may not be aware, but a fairly prominent name in the wrestling world is having his retirement match tonight in Washington D.C. Perhaps you’ve heard of him.
In honor of the event, we’re posing a question today. What’s the best Portland Trail Blazers retirement you can remember?
It’s a tricky question for Portland fans. Three transcendent heroes sit atop the franchise’s Mt. Rushmore. Bill Walton led the Blazers to their only World Championship in 1977, but he left the city a couple of years after
under acrimonious circumstances (and/or medical lawsuits). Clyde Drexler took Portland to the NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992 but he demanded a trade soon after. The relationship between Clyde and the franchise still isn’t fully healed. Damian Lillard’s retirement journey went off the rails a little bit in 2023. He’s back with the Blazers now but isn’t playing and isn’t, in fact, retired yet.
Well, at least there’s the fourth name on that mountain, Rasheed W…hooops.
Obviously players have returned to the franchise. Jerome Kersey, Terry Porter, and Brian Grant come to mind easily. But seriously, has there ever been a player who’s gracefully retired from the Blazers the way John Cena is exiting the WWE? Or do we have to go to broadcasters and others to get our retirement fix?
