LATROBE – As the Pittsburgh Steelers get set to take the practice field on Thursday, head coach Mike McCarthy spoke with the media.
I asked McCarthy about what the progression he’s seen in Drew Allar from rookie minicamp up through the first week of training camp, to which the Steelers’ head coach said the rookie is making daily throws that raise eyebrows.
“He’s doing what you want from a young player,” McCarthy said. “These are tough practices because you’re not just repeating concepts… there hasn’t
been a day where he hasn’t made a throw that makes you say, ‘Okay, that’s a young man taking a step.‘”
Allar was listed as QB4 on the Steelers’ first depth chart behind Mason Rudolph and Will Howard who were listed at QB2 and QB3, respectively. He had a pair of throws o the first day of camp that had everyone in attendance talking – two rips over the middle of the field, one of which was a touchdown to Robert Tonyan to close practice. He also threw a long touchdown to Cole Burgess among several other throws where he has showcased his timing on throws over the middle.
Allar will take the field as a Steeler for the first time next Thursday when the Steelers host the Green Bay Packers in the preseason opener.
