Two years ago today, Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn put forth opposing teams of fighters for a “5v5” event in Riyadh.
Warren’s Queensberry side swept the day, 5-0, and Queensberry sent a cheeky reminder to Matchroom today on social media.
“Happy anniversary, Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn,” the Queensberry account posted, along with photos from the event. “You ready to run it back?”
“We want revenge,” Matchroom’s team replied.
The rout started when Willy Hutchinson beat Craig Richards over 12 rounds,
followed by Nick Ball taking the WBA featherweight title from Raymond Ford. Hamzah Sheeraz continued the rout with a dominant win over Austin “Ammo” Williams, scoring an 11th round TKO. The heavyweights took over from there. Daniel Dubois stopped Filip Hrgovic on cuts in the eighth round, and Zhilei Zhang halted Deontay Wilder in the fifth round.
One idea for this year could see another 5v5 event headlined by Queensberry’s Tyson Fury finally facing Matchroom’s Anthony Joshua. That fight won’t need anything more from a promotional standpoint, but could provide some compelling matchups and some extra sizzle to an already-huge event.
If you could see another Queensberry vs Matchroom “5v5” event soon, what would you want to see?
