Brian Kelly’s future as the head coach of LSU is in doubt.
Reports from college football’s biggest news breakers (namely Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, ESPN’s Pete Thamel, and On3’s Pete Nakos) reported Sunday
afternoon that Kelly’s status is “in flux” and “in limbo.”
If it was simply because of the product on the field, then sure Kelly’s fate was probably sealed in last night’s 49-25 humiliating defeat to Texas A&M. But Kelly’s status as head coach of the Tigers is complicated for two big reasons: 1) the sheer size of a potential buyout (about $53 million) and 2) LSU currently does not have a permanent president residing over the university.
Because LSU does not currently have a president (though they did recently name five finalists), Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is now involved in the process, and per Delly, is an “integral” piece. Per Dellenger’s reporting, Landry either is, or is expected to, meet with key donors and LSU board members. Last night after the LSU game, Landry tweeted his displeasure with LSU raising the cost of season tickets for 2026.
No decisions has been made at the time of this writing. Nakos reported that LSU’s position coaches were sent home from the facility because of the uncertainty surrounding situation. If and when something official breaks, we’ll of course have that for you.
