While it’s technically not a must win, it’s an “it would be really, really, really beneficial if we could win” — and it’s a game I really want us to win too, for a number of reasons.
Coventry haven’t been in the best of form at all – neither have we, of course – and with their only home win coming thanks to thumping
Newcastle we do need to be aware of their attacking ability.
However, we’ve almost got a full squad back after being pretty badly hit by injuries over the past month or so, and with a few more attacking options staking their claim for game time of some description thanks to strong displays on Wednesday, we’ve got more attacking prowess than any of us probably thought we had this time last week.
That said, it’ll be a tight game. Their fans, for whatever reason, froth when we come to town so it’l. be a good atmosphere and I reckon we’ll come out with a much-needed three points.
Key differentiator: I think the leadership of Thomas Meunier, who I expect to be back in the team, will be crucial.
Confidence: 5/10
Bold call: Both sides to have a player sent off.
Malc Dugdale (Scarred happy clapper) says…
Score prediction: Coventry 0 Sunderland 2
Coventry have been shipping goals for fun and not scoring many in most games — apart from against the filth, but we know how crap they are, whereas we scored three with our second team in the cup against a decent less-rotated Brentford side.
I’m hopeful we can keep a clean sheet and get a couple of goals early in the game to kill the crowd and take this home with a controlled performance after half time.
Key differentiator: Brian Brobbey is back and rested, and we have competition for places starting to ramp up big time, including out wide. I think our depth and rising confidence will be the difference today.
Confidence: 6/10
Bold call: 0-2 in the first half then a shut out for the second to take all three points home.
Jack Howe-Gingell (Eternal optimist) says…
Score prediction: Coventry 1 Sunderland 3
After a fun game against Brentford in midweek that saw us progress to the next stage, we must take that confidence into this one. Coventry will see us as a beatable opponent but we need to remind them how tough we are.
A promising display against a strong Brentford team not only provided some food for thought for Régis Le Bris but yet another platform to spring from.
We must take advantage and get the season back on track.
Key differentiator: They’ll have an arrogance that’ll play against them, and we’ll pick them off.
Confidence: 9/10
Bold call: Two of our goals to be deemed own goals.
“Champion” Will Jones (Heart over head) says…
Score prediction: Coventry 1 Sunderland 3
That Brentford game was much more like it.
A 3-2 win, a proper performance and hopefully a bit of momentum to take into Saturday. The rotation clearly didn’t stop us getting the job done, and there should be plenty of confidence going into Coventry.
Coventry are a tough side on their own patch, but after Wednesday, I fancy us to carry that attacking intent into the league.
If we start quickly and get them on the back foot, there’s no reason we can’t come away with all three points. I’m going for a big away win.
Key differentiator: Taking the confidence from Brentford into the game and making our chances count.
Confidence: 7/10
Bold call: There will be two goals in the first ten minutes.
Matty Foster (Pragmatist) says…
Score prediction: Coventry 1 Sunderland 2
I don’t want to be that guy and call this a ‘must win’, but it would certainly go a long way in helping our current position in the league, given where Coventry find themselves too.
This is our first meeting since that magical night at the Stadium of Light, and Coventry will want revenge.
Add to that the ‘rivalry’ that’s built up over the years.
Key differentiator: The team is starting to regain some strength with players returning from injury, and that’s vital for us.
Confidence: 6/10
Bold call: History will repeat itself in that one of our goals comes from a defensive gaffe from a Coventry player.

Anthony Gair (Depreciating optimist) says…
Score prediction: Coventry 0 Sunderland 4
We’re going to run rampant at the Ricoh Arena (or whatever it’s called these days).
Jimmy Hill will turn in his grave at how poor Frank Lampard’s Coventry will be, and we’ll kickstart our season in the most prolific fashion.
Key differentiator: The press from the front will force multiple errors from Coventry.
Confidence: 10/10
Bold call: We’ll have more than five corners in the first half.
Gary Winter (Glass almost empty) says…
Score prediction: Coventry 1 Sunderland 1
I’m going to refrain from using the term ‘must-win’ now, as there are are too many points still to play for, and a good run of form can elevate a team quickly to mid-table.
However, a win today would be a huge boost whilst landing a blow on a fellow struggler, and would give the Lads a platform and some much-needed belief following the excellent League Cup victory.
Key differentiator: I’m not sure where the attacking quality displayed at Brentford and Man City away has disappeared to, but the League Cup win aside, we’re generally playing without belief and often with fear.
If that belief turns up today, we’ll win, but unfortunately league position can be psychologically very damaging and we’re starting to play very much like the twentieth best team.
Confidence: 6/10
Bold call: All goalscorers will also end the game with a yellow card.

Score prediction: Coventry 1 Sunderland 2
Oh good. It’s time to renew our rivalry with Coventry in match that for me is must-win.
With Sunderland unbeaten in three, the green shoots are starting to come up and I think the lads will avoid any Halloween horror show.
Key differentiator: Feels like our confidence and team spirit is getting stronger each game.
Confidence: 7/10
Bold call: Wilson Isidor comes off the bench and scores the winner.

Last game thoughts…
The cup game was a real breath of fresh air for me and listening to our pods for a lot of the lads too.
Mass rotation often leads to pandemonium, but the score probably flattered Brentford who rotated far less. We unearthed a raft of competition for places, and some genuine talent out wide may well be used from today.
Coventry isn’t a place we generally do well at (ignoring a couple of Mays ago), but they’re really struggling with both scoring and defending, and we’re hopefully on the way up while encouraging today’s hosts to head down the way.
Last game predictions…
Four of the lads went for a draw and penalties to decide the cup game, and could not have been further off the mark really.
Jack and Gair called a win but neither got the exact score — though if you combined their joint scores, you could not get any closer.
Predictions table and standings
With only one point scored for two of the writers, the table stays the same but Jack closes the gap on Brett a little, and Gair gets a point closer to second place.
How the points are awarded
Just a quick reminder of how we allocate points to our match-by-match predictions:
- Correct score = Three points
- Correct outcome (but not correct score) = One point
- Correct Bold Call = One point
- Possible deductions for repeatedly not submitting on time = a two-point deduction.
