One of the best things about every FIFA World Cup is discovering players you simply did not know much about before the tournament. Every four years, a handful of footballers take advantage of the global stage to introduce themselves to millions of fans, while others prove they belong among the game’s elite.
This year’s World Cup has been no different.
Belgium’s Nicolas Raskin has emerged as one of the tournament’s most complete midfielders, combining relentless work rate with composure in possession.
Fellow Belgian Charles De Ketelaere has reminded everyone why he is one of Europe’s most gifted attacking players. Belgium’s run to the quarterfinals has also helped shine a brighter spotlight on Hans Vanaken, whose intelligence and passing have been key components of the Red Devils’ success.
Elsewhere, Norway’s Antonio Nusa has continued to showcase his explosive pace and flair, Morocco’s Bilal El Khannouss has looked increasingly comfortable against the game’s best players, and United States attacking midfielder Malik Tillman was one of the tournament’s pleasant surprises before the USMNT’s exit.
Of course, every fan’s answer will be different. Maybe it is a player from one of the surprise teams. Maybe it is someone you had only heard about but had never actually watched. Or perhaps there is a young talent who has convinced you that your favorite club should make a move before everyone else catches on.
