The USMNT has had a recent streak of dual nationals deciding to represent the Stars and Stripes over other nations they are eligible for. Several stars for the team like Florin Balogun, Jedi Robinson, and Yunus Musah have passed up chances to represent various sundry locales and are now a key part of the US senior team. It would appear that a promising talent for the USA will not be joining them.
Mexican outlet Circulo AM is reporting that Chicago Fire attacking midfielder Brian Gutiérrez has obtained
a Mexican passport and wants to play for El Tri. Gutiérrez has represented the USA twice and would need to file a switch with FIFA in order to complete the move, he has represented the USA going back to the U-16 team.
This year Gutiérrez notched nine goals and three assists with the Chicago Fire in league play as the team qualified for the playoffs. His two appearances for the national team came during January camp and as 2025 has drawn on he has not had another call up amid Mauricio Pochettino whittling down the player pool. Despite his success in MLS, and potential for the national team, the attacker has not found himself in consideration for earning a chance to play in the World Cup for the USA and has set his sights on representing his parents’ nation of Mexico.
