Bayern Munich got the job done against Atalanta, brushing aside the Bergamo-based team 6-1. The match had it all, including dodgy yellow cards, one of which was received by Joshua Kimmich for time-wasting. The second leg is effectively dead rubber, so this might be a ploy to get some rest in for the quarterfinals where the yellows reset. Was it all a plan?
“No. If he managed to keep his cool there wouldn’t be a yellow card”, Kimmich said after the match (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “I definitely
took too long but I didn’t want to rush the pass into their press. I think if he doesn’t charge, there would be no yellow.
“Generally, I’m someone who wants to play all games. But due to the result in the first leg, I think that’s manageable”, the 31-year-old said. He was pressed even more on the matter where the reporter referenced Sergio Ramos getting a two-match ban for an intentional yellow. Kimmich held firm and said “No, why’s that? A yellow card is not punishable. It wasn’t intentional”.
He and Michael Olise will sit the next leg out, and both will be back in time for the next round.
