As one door closes for Juventus to try and get Douglas Luiz off the books this coming summer, a familiar door in the Premier League has reappeared for one of the Bianconeri’s biggest transfer blunders in recent years.
Just a couple of days after we heard news that Chelsea were checking in to see if they might be able to sign the 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder on loan for the rest of the 2025-26 season, the other team that was reported as a potential option is now the destination. That is the club
in which Juventus signed Luiz from during their whirlwind summer transfer market under former director Cristiano Giuntoli: Aston Villa, which will bring Luiz back to Villa Park on loan for the rest of the season, according to reports in England and Italy.
Per David Ornstein of The Athletic, the loan deal to Villa does include an option to buy over the summer. What the price of that option may be still remains to be seen, but it certainly is the hope to be free of Luiz’s contract that Juventus were hoping for even as the deal with Nottingham Forest didn’t work out at all.
It is essentially the same kind of deal that Luiz first joined Nottingham Firest on last summer, although we don’t know if there is any sort of appearance clause that is tied into the option to buy being picked up or anything like that. As of now, though, Juventus are getting a lifeline or sorts and potentially have an out when it comes to Luiz, who still could very well return to Turin and be one of the players who is suddenly just shuttled from club to club before their contract runs out.
Luiz’s contract with Juventus currently runs through 2029.
Luiz will be reunited with the manager who oversaw his best run of form in the Premier League prior to his move to Italy two summers ago in Unai Emery. This season, Emery has turned Villa into one of the biggest surprises in England, as they currently sit third and just four points off league leaders Arsenal. During his final season with Aston Villa in 2023-24, Luiz had nine goals and 10 assists in 51 games across all competitions.
