Today’s roster move: Porter Hodge recalled, Jordan Wicks optioned.
Sunday notes:
- IN THE MILE HIGH CITY: This is the 40th series that the Cubs have played at Denver since the Rockies joined the National League in 1993. The Cubs have swept only three of the previous series: three games in 1994, two in 1998 and three in 2004. In 2007, the Cubs won the first two games, then lost the third and fourth. They had not won the first two in any of the 17 subsequent series before this weekend. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- SWEEPS: The Cubs have swept five three-game series this year: at home vs. the Guardians, Rockies and White Sox; on the road vs. the Athletics and Angels. They won the first two games of six other three-game series and lost the third. Only one was on the road, at Milwaukee. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- KING TUCK: Kyle Tucker, last eight games since Aug. 22: .393/.514/.821 (11-for-28) with three doubles, three home runs, eight RBI, six walks and eight runs scored.
- HAPP-ENSTANCE: Ian Happ, last 12 games since Aug. 17: .325/.449/.550 (13-for-40) with six doubles, a home run, nine walks, five RBI and seven runs scored.
Cubs lineup:
Rockies lineup:
Matthew Boyd, LHP vs. Tanner Gordon, RHP

Matthew Boyd was going along, having a really fine season, until his last four starts. He’s posted a 5.56 ERA and 1.235 WHIP, with four home runs allowed in 22.1 innings.
It’s really simple: Boyd is going to have to do better. Could he be running out of gas? Let’s hope not.
Earlier
this year, Boyd had a good outing vs. the Rockies, May 28 at Wrigley Field. He allowed four hits and one unearned run in six innings, with eight strikeouts. A repeat of that would be nice, although Coors Field might negate that sort of pitching. This will be Boyd’s first-ever start in Coors Field.
Like his teammate McCade Brown, who started last night’s game, Tanner Gordon is an Illinois native (Champaign) who played college ball at Indiana. The two were both Hoosiers in 2019.
Gordon was the Braves’ sixth-round pick in 2019 and came to the Rockies two years ago for former Cub Pierce Johnson.
Gordon has made 18 MLB starts, eight last year and 10 this year, and the results have not been good: 7.33 ERA, 1.677 WHIP, 17 home runs allowed in 84.2 innings. He was Boyd’s opponent in that May 28 game and allowed six hits and two runs in 4.2 innings. PCA homered off him.
He has been somewhat better lately. Last three starts: 2.65 ERA, 1.667 WHIP. In his career, oddly, he’s been much better at Coors Field (4.98 ERA in eight starts) than on the road (9.80 ERA in 10 starts).
Let’s hope the Cubs flip that script today.
