One of Mexico’s greatest and Pachuca’s captain, Mónica Ocampo, has announced her retirement.
Mónica Ocampo, one of Mexico’s greatest
Twenty years, two World Cups, Olympics and a championship later, Mexican legend Mónica Ocampo announced her retirement
at the National Congress of Women’s Soccer.
“I’m quitting soccer officially,” she said, among tears. Ocampo also thanked her family for all the support she received during her career. However, she left it clear that she’ll take another role outside of the field.
Ocampo will be forever remembered for the goal she scored in 2011 when Mexico played against England in the 2011 FIFA World Cup in Germany, a goal that was voted as the best goal scored in a World Cup by FIFA.
The 30-yard strike helped earn a point from the group stage match after Mexico was a goal down for 33 minutes until Ocampo’s rocket.
The Tuzas’ captain not only became a legend for the national team but also led Pachuca to a championship in the Clausura 2025 tournament – first one in the club’s history. Added to that, she led the club to the Champions of Champions cup months versus Monterrey.
Her legacy in Mexico has been recognized by Pachuca as well, after they put her name in the Hidalgo stadium, Tuzas’s house.
“I know this isn’t goodbye. I know that with Club Pachuca, I will continue to contribute to women’s soccer in our country. I am very proud of what I achieved on the field and now of what I can achieve off it,” she said.
