Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd has had two injured list stints this year, one for a bicep issue, the other for a knee injury suffered while playing with his kids. The latter likely wins “Weird Baseball Player Injury of the Year.”
Boyd’s ready to return and so has been activated from the 15-day injured list to start tonight’s game against the Mets at Citi Field.
Boyd’s last MLB start, May 3 vs. the Diamondbacks, was pretty good: six innings, two runs. He threw 59 pitches in a rehab start last Saturday
for High-A South Bend, so he might be on a pitch limit of 75 or so in this game.
To make room for Boyd on the 26-man active roster, reliever Gavin Hollowell was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Hollowell has allowed one run in 2.2 innings since his latest recall on June 16. That was a home run by Bo Bichette in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader. Hollowell is a fungible reliever who’ll likely be back at some point this year. As always, we await developments.
Today’s game preview will post at 4 p.m. CT.
