For the second time this season, Manuel Neuer posted a clean sheet in the Champions League. Bayern Munich’s stout defense only forced Neuer to make three saves in the 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid. Neuer’s shutout was paired nicely with goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer, and the Bavarians leave Spain with three crucial points.
Karl’s game winner ended a scoring drought from his previous seven appearances for Bayern. Prior to this match, the 18-year old attacker had only contributed one goal
and two assists all season.
In the postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern’s team captain squashed any controversy around the teenage goal-scorer.
“I think that when we wear this shirt and step onto the pitch together, what’s crucial is that we give everything for the team and the club and do our best to win games,” said Neuer. “It doesn’t matter who scores the goals; what’s important is that we celebrate them. Lenny is a very important part of our team and a member of this group, so we’re happy for him and always wish him the best and hope he puts in great performances. He proved that again today, so there’s absolutely nothing to discuss or make an issue of.”
Karl’s form has certainly dropped this season after he exploded onto the scene with nine goals and eight assists last season. Luckily, he found the crucial icebreaker tonight and will surely breathe a heavy sigh of relief as he continues to grow as a promising player at a big club.
