As Katie Taylor gets ready to end her illustrious fighting career with a farewell outing at home in Croke Parke this weekend, she speaks to Matchroom Boxing to talk about all the positive feelings she has when looking back over all of her accomplishments and says she’ll be walking away satisfied with everything she’s done.
“People have asked me about my last fight, is it going to be a sad moment for me?” Taylor said. “It’s not going to be a sad moment at all. It’s actually going to be a moment of
joy, just looking back at my whole career. The emotions I’m going to be feeling fight night are not sad emotions, they’re very, very happy emotions and I’m very, very grateful. I have a heart full of gratitude…My dream venue, at home, this really is the stuff of dreams.”
But while reflecting on her own career, Taylor also keeps her focus on opponent Flora Pili, who will be looking to wreck Taylor’s swan song.
“It’s a great opportunity for her, isn’t it? She’s coming to spoil the day,” Taylor would say.
And while there’s none who would truly question the greatness of Taylor, she herself doesn’t want to heap any additional praise upon herself, so when asked about whether she considers herself to be the best female fighter of all time, she had this to say.
“I think that’s for other people to say, but I certainly have never ever ducked any opponents throughout my whole career,” she said. “I’ve tried to fight the best. I’ve tried to put on some amazing performances, I’ve tried to elevate the sport.”
Elevate women’s boxing, Taylor certainly has over the years. This weekend she looks to end it all on a high note in front of all her admirers back home in Ireland.
