In their last game before the All-Star siesta, the New York Knicks (34*-20) face the Philadelphia 76ers (30-23) tonight at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Both teams hope to bounce back from losses they’d rather
erase from their records. Last night at MSG, the Knicks fell in overtime to the Indiana Pacers, due to their defense allowing 124 regulation points to a team that averages 110 points per game. On Tuesday, Toumani Camara scored a career-high 30 points and Portland erupted for a 49-point third quarter to bury the Joel Embiid-less Philadelphia, 135–118.
Over their last ten games, the Knicks have won eight while the Sixers went 5-and-5. Tonight’s tilt will be the last of their regular season series, which Philly leads the series 2-1. Two and half weeks ago, New York beat the Cheesesteaks, 112-109, despite losing the fourth quarter 32-22. Jalen Brunson led our heroes with 31 points and OG Anunoby added 23. Embiid paced Philadelphia with 38 points (big first half, smaller second half) and Tyrese Maxey chipped in 22.
Tyrese Maxey drives bus, averaging 28.8 points per game and shooting around 38% from deep. Joel Embiid remains an interior force and averages about 26.6 points on efficient shooting 52% eFG, Kelly “Sideshow Bob” Oubre, Jr. can be counted on for about 14 points, and rookie VJ Edgecombe delivers 15 points per game. Paul George was having a solid season for Philly but has been suspended (ruh-roh!) for violating the league’s drug policy.
The 76ers sit sixth in the East this season with an offensive rating that’s better than league average, a defensive rating that’s dead in the middle, and about 117 points per game. Their likely starting five from their most recent game includes Maxey, Edgecombe, Oubre, Trendon Watford (6.2 PPG), and Embiid, or Andre Drummond if he’s out.
The Knicks list Mitchell Robinson day-to-day with ankle management and OG Anunoby day-to-day with right toe avulsion. What’s that? According to Doctor Google, it’s painful:
Avulsion of the toe refers to the partial or complete tearing away of the toenail (nail avulsion) or a small piece of bone (avulsion fracture) from the toe, often due from trauma like stubbing it or a sports injury, leading to pain, swelling, and potential infection, requiring medical care for cleaning, repair, and preventing future issues, with regrowth of a toenail taking many months.
Don’t be shocked if the Knicks rest OG rest, giving him an extended All-Star break to heal up. Meanwhile, the 76ers list Dominick Barlow and OAKAAKUYOAK Quentin Grimes as day-to-day with illness, while Joel Embiid is day-to-day with knee.
Prediction
ESPN gives the Knicks about 60% chance to win. Really? Will they have anything left from last night’s cardio workout? New York needs to limit Maxey’s perimeter game and put bodies on Embiid. Rebounding and fast-break points will help. Rookie Mohamed Diawara vanished last night at MSG, and the Knicks would really benefit from him reappearing tonight. And defense, defense, defense. In a repeat of their last game, New York will hold off a late Phillly surge to take a win into the All-Star break. Knicks by three.
