Khamzat Chimaev fans can breathe a sigh of relief as he is on track for his first title defense Saturday against Sean Strickland at UFC 328.
Jeremy Stephens fans, not so much.
Friday’s official weigh-ins for Saturday’s event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., almost went off without a hitch, with middleweight champion Chimaev and challenger Strickland coming in at 185 pounds, and co-main event flyweight championship bout competitors Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira hitting the mark at 125 pounds.
However,
there was one huge blip this morning as longtime veteran Stephens failed to make the lightweight limit. Stephens weighed in at 160 pounds, four pounds over the limit for his non-title bout against King Green (155).
The UFC later announced that Green vs. Stephens will proceed as a catchweight bout, with Stephens forfeiting 30 percent of his purse as penalty.
