By signing one veteran safety, the Steelers have released another.
Pittsburgh announced the release of safety Darnell Savage on Sunday afternoon, in the same release announcing the official signing of safety Rayshawn Jenkins.
Jenkins was reported to be signing with the Steelers on Saturday. The 32-year-old started three games and appeared in all 17 as a rotational safety and special teamer for the Cleveland Browns last year.
The Steelers worked out both Jenkins and veteran safety Jordan Whitehead during
the first week of training camp, signaling the team had interest in bolstering its depth chart at the position.
Although a former first-round pick in 2019, Savage recorded only one start in 2025, spending stints with three different teams. One of the more recognizable names on the team’s safety depth chart behind the starters, beat writers warned that his chances of making the roster were far from a guarantee.
Now, Jenkins has a chance at making the Steelers’ 53-man roster with the preseason rapidly approaching. Pittsburgh’s safety room currently contains the following names: DeShon Elliott, Jaquan Brisker, cornerback/safety Jalen Ramsey, Robert Spears-Jennings, Jack Henderson, Sebastian Castro, and Rayshawn Jenkins.
