Disproving doubters is the name of the game at Bayern Munich. With a half-injured squad, Bayern travelled to face Atlético Madrid away and breaking all expectations, won comfortably with a dominant performance. This game was not just important for the club, it was also particularly important for Lennart Karl.
Karl has been under fire for long, particularly from fans, and partly from pundits too. It has all been seemingly downhill for the youngster of late. Just a few months ago, Karl was a teenage
sensation who had the entire world watching. He had it all, he was unassuming, talented, hardworking and senior players around him had nothing but praise. He was touted to be the next big thing, until the Real Madrid statement and the backlash that followed it. Slowly, his game began declining, gross mistakes and oversight tarnishing what was once a career worth looking at. Perhaps, it also did not help matters that in Der Klassiker, Karl was only subbed on the dying minutes of the game.
Despite all, Karl seems determined to get his game back. Against Atléti, Karl won the game by scoring the opening goal. Manager Aaron Danks had nothing but praise for the teen, especially highlighting his character and mental fortitude.
“There’s been a lot of noise around Lenny recently. As a young player, I think he showed great character and great mental strength,” Danks praised, per @iMiaSanMia. “He has a good belief in himself. And his performance today was great, capped off with a really good goal. I thought he finished it excellent, lifting it over the goalkeeper,” he went on.
Referring to Karl’s controversial celebration following the goal, Danks denies having seen it. “I haven’t seen the celebration.”
He concluded, saying the staff are extremely pleased. “We’re really pleased for Lenny, pleased for the group, and pleased with the team’s performance tonight,” he stated.
Karl chose to celebrate after the goal with what was a direct message to his critics — that he was not interested in what was being spoken of him. Closing his ears and performing the speaking gesture, the celebration sent the message across loud and clear. Danks may have chosen to answer curtly, but the same cannot be said for others who will certainly have their choice of words for the youngster’s ‘attitude’.
