Bayern Munich is famous for housing the Road Runner, aka Alphonso Davies. However, it also houses one unsung marathon runner in Konrad Laimer. A relentless worker who puts every last drop of blood sweat
for his team, the Austrian midfielder turned full-back has earned his praise from his coach Vincent Kompany.
Underrated technical ability
Speaking ahead of the Champions League bout with Sporting CP that Bayern won 3-1, Kompany picked one of his underrated players to talk about. VK highlighted Laimer’s goal against Stuttgart which was created due to the sheer tenacity of the full back to push so high and pressure his opponents. “The goal in Stuttgart was technically very good. He has a lot of energy and he fits very well into our team. He’s a hard worker and has everything that goes into professional sports. He also can offer many solutions technically. He brings so much to the table; you shouldn’t underestimate what he can do technically,” praised Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Shocking stats for a “defensive” player
Laimer’s technical ability can go under the radar due to his position as a full back or as a midfield destroyer. However, he has always had an eye for the goal. He boasts a great cross and can manage a dribble or two when needed. His seven assists and two goals this season, underscore his all round ability to be effective in both attack and defence.
But, what has always stood out in Laimer has been the Austrian’s ability to be the engine for his team no matter who his team goes up against or where he plays on the pitch. His versatility has allowed VK to rotate him between LB, RB and CDM roles. And. to top it all off, the connection he has developed with Michael Olise has turned Bayern’s right wing into one of the deadliest in Europe.
