Bayern Munich fans can breathe a little easier after Vincent Kompany provided an update on Joshua Kimmich’s fitness following the club’s 2-1 preseason win over Aston Villa.
Although Kimmich did not feature in the friendly, Kompany revealed that the midfielder’s absence was purely a precaution as he continues to manage a lingering issue dating back to the World Cup.
“He has a little bit something he still carries from the World Cup. He trained this morning but wasn’t involved in the game. We don’t want
to take any risks before the start of the season. We think he’ll be fine, but we chose to be careful with him,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
While Kompany did not disclose the exact nature of the injury, his comments suggest Bayern Munich is taking a long-term view with one of its most important players. Kimmich remains the heartbeat of the midfield and one of the team’s undisputed leaders, so there is little to gain by pushing him through a preseason friendly when competitive matches are just around the corner.
The encouraging part of Kompany’s update is that Kimmich was able to train on the day of the match. That indicates the issue is being managed rather than representing a significant setback, and the coaching staff appears confident he will be available when the season begins.
It is another reminder that preseason is as much about protecting key players as it is about building fitness and rhythm. Bayern Munich has already seen the importance of carefully managing workloads throughout the summer, particularly with several players returning from injuries or international duty.
For now, patience appears to be the priority, and if Kompany’s confidence is justified, Kimmich should be ready to lead Bayern Munich when the matches truly matter.
