When the New England Patriots released rookie Travis Shaw last Friday, one follow-up thought was that it was “the first shoe to drop.” Indeed, shoe No. 2 has now been subjected to the powers of gravity as well: fellow defensive tackle Isaiah Iton was re-signed by the club on Monday.
Let’s take a look at what the move means for the team with training camp fast approaching.
Back to 9 DTs
When the Patriots released the aforementioned Travis Shaw, they reduced their defensive line group from previously nine to eight
players. With Iton now back in the fold, the group now looks like this:
Interior defensive line (9): Milton Williams (97), Christian Barmore (90), Cory Durden (94), Joshua Farmer (92), Leonard Taylor III (93), Eric Gregory (95), Jeremiah Pharms Jr. (98), David Blay Jr. (96), Isaiah Iton (—)
Out of the nine interior defensive linemen currently on New England’s roster, three can be considered locks to make the 53-man team this year. Milton Williams and Christian Barmore are the undisputed starters and one of the top interior duos in the NFL, while Cory Durden was a part-time DT3 in 2025 and seems ready to take on a more prominent role in his second season in the Patriots’ defense.
Iton, meanwhile, will be competing for a rotational and backup spot behind the projected top trio.
Multi-faceted decision
Iton being brought back likely comes down to more than just a need to improve the numbers along the defensive line.
For starters, he already was part of the Patriots’ active roster last summer. Originally joining in mid-May, he remained there until suffering a season-ending hip injury in an exhibition contest versus the Vikings. Iton was placed on injured reserve shortly thereafter, and spent the rest of 2025 there — which allowed him to remain in the system.
Additionally, he showed some promise particularly as a run defender. While not the bulkiest of players at 6-foot-3, 300 pounds, he could therefore factor into an early-down mix that will look different with Khyiris Tonga now in Kansas City.
Finally, Iton being re-signed suggests he has fully overcome the hip injury that knocked him out for 2025. His injury status might have factored into the team’s original decision not to tender the 24-year-old as an exclusive rights free agent back in March.
No expected cap impact
While the full details of his new contract with the Patriots have not been reported yet, expect Iton not to leave a dent in the team’s current salary cap. After all, the deal he signed will likely look similar to the ERFA tender he could have gotten ahead of free agency: one year with a non-guaranteed base salary of $885,000.
If that is indeed the case, Iton will not qualify for Top 51 status. This means, he would only have a cap impact if able to make the 53-man roster or end up on the practice squad or injured reserve again.
Consequently, New England’s $34.2 million in cap space, via Miguel Benzan, would remain unchanged heading into training camp.
Tight end depth still TBD
Going back to that shoe-dropping mentioned above. One thought was that said shoe could have been tight end-shaped. After all, head coach Mike Vrabel mentioned during mandatory minicamp in June that “that’s somewhere we’ll probably have to evaluate the numbers.”
At the moment, the Patriots’ tight end group stands at five players deep. Besides team captain Hunter Henry, it also features Jack Westover, C.J. Dippre and rookies Eli Raridon and Tanner Arkin. With Iton filling the open spot on the Patriots’ 90-man offseason roster, the group remains unchanged for the moment.
3 free agents left unaccounted for
Iton returning to New England after four months on the open market means that only three members of the Patriots’ original 14-player free agency class remain unaccounted for: running back Deneric Prince, offensive tackle Thayer Munford Jr. and defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy are still available with training camp nearing.
Prince and Roy were not tendered as exclusive rights and restricted free agents, respectively. Munford Jr, on the other hand, was not re-signed by the club despite finishing the 2025 season as its sixth offensive lineman and a regularly-used extra blocker/jumbo tight end. Like Iton, Munford Jr. had entered the offseason with some injury questions and might be a candidate to find a spot on an NFL roster further down the line.
