J.J. McCarthy vs. Kyler Murray — the Minnesota Vikings QB battle starts now. On The Real Forno Show, Tyler Forness and Dave Stefano break down exactly what McCarthy must prove at 2026 Vikings training camp to earn the starting quarterback job over Kyler Murray. This Vikings 1st & SKOL production delivers the film study, advanced stats, and unfiltered analysis that every Vikings fan needs heading into camp. The verdict? McCarthy has real upside — but consistency will make or break his shot.
Kevin O’Connell
has gone 43-25 in four years by finding his quarterback and riding him. As Forness frames it: “If either side straight up wins, it’s going to be a 2026 only conversation.” This is not about McCarthy’s ceiling in 2028 — it’s about whether he can outshine Kyler Murray right now, before the season starts. The Ravens joint practices may be the single most important moment of McCarthy’s career.
Key Points from the Episode:
- Improve underlying metrics — against quality defenses. McCarthy ranked 41st in EPA per play (−0.294), success rate (37.7%), and CPOE (−8.7%) in his first six starts. His final four starts ranked 2nd and 4th nationally — but all came against defenses ranked 27th–32nd. “He has not shown that he can do it against a good defense yet. That doesn’t mean he can’t, it means he hasn’t, and those are two different things.”
- Fix mechanics — footwork, leg whip, and touch. McCarthy’s lower-body inconsistency costs him accuracy. Unlike Kyler Murray’s controlled leg whip, McCarthy’s can spin him off-platform. “He’s gotta string good footwork. He’s gotta string linking his upper and lower half… he has to prove that he can do it consistently.” OTA reports show improvement — it now must show up live.
- Become a faster, more consistent processor. McCarthy had 19 big-time throws (7.3%) but 15 turnover-worthy plays (4.8%) — a lethal imbalance. Half-second delays made the offensive line look worse than it was. “Can you anticipate that 12-yard dig route coming open? Can you do that nine out of 10 times? Those are the things that I wanna see.”
- Tighten ball placement and build real chemistry with Justin Jefferson. A 28% off-target rate to the best receiver in football is unsustainable. Dave Stefano adds the human element: “J.J. McCarthy is going to have to convince Justin Jefferson he’s the guy… and influence that decision.” Receivers shouldn’t have to guess. “McCarthy sprayed his placement a little too much last year.”
- Dominate the Ravens joint practices. Forness is unambiguous: “He’s gotta dominate those joint practices. He’s gotta do it.” The joint sessions — not the preseason game — are where the starting job will be decided. A decision is expected by July 23rd. “If he does well in the joint practices, that’s gonna go a long way.”
