According to a report from Bild journalists Julian Agardi and Michel Schröer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Nathaniel Brown was not brought into Bayern Munich’s squad to be a back-up.
The former Eintracht Frankfurt star reportedly has a big fan in head coach Vincent Kompany, who seems to have even bigger plans for the Germany international at left-back:

to the team. He also made it clear that, despite Brown’s impressive performances in attack, he still firmly sees him as a left-back.

Brown has seen his stock rise mightily in recent months and could be winning over a very important figure in Bavaria — the manager.
If Kompany is planning to use Brown as his starting left-back, it would be a very interesting move in terms of the squad’s roster dynamics. The incumbent starter, Alphonso Davies, has had a very difficult time in dealing with injuries since returning from an ACL tear. Davies is also the owner of a massive contract as well.
With three subsequent injuries last season after the ACL comeback, Davies was affected throughout the summer, which has put the Canadian in a tough spot. As the old adage goes, your best ability is availability.
Davies is still an insane talent, but it — if true — this report indicates that he might be in for a battle to keep his job. The really crazy thing is that Bayern Munich has two incredible talents like this for left-back — not exactly the most marquee position on the pitch and definitely not the easiest one to fill with a quality player.
As for how fans should receive this news, the competition will play itself out. Kompany is not in the business of losing or getting too sentimental over player selections. In this case, the best man might truly win…but who will it be?
