The hot stove stayed warm yesterday, as it was the Yankees’ archrivals turn to make a move. Boston traded for former Yankee Sonny Gray, getting him from St. Louis for a pair of pitchers including former Yankee farmhand
Richard Fitts (and we can now go back to rooting for a 60-grade prospect name). Gray wasn’t at his best in 2025, pitching to a 4.28 ERA in 180.2 innings, but his underlying peripherals suggest he was better than that. Now he’ll be pitching in a Sox uniform for the final year of the three-year, $75 million deal he inked with the Cardinals before 2024.
As for the Yankees, we’re still waiting for another move to drop on their end. Until then, we’ll keep plodding along with our offseason series, beginning with Josh looking at a potential trade target in Steven Kwan. Nolan goes over the winter ball results that the Yankees’ prospects are producing, Jeremy hands out a report card to Ryan McMahon following his deadline arrival, and Sam has some fun looking into Yankees that surprisingly found their way onto MVP ballots.
Questions/Prompts:
1. How well do you think the Yankees will fare against Sonny Gray next season?
2. Are you surprised that we’ve seen a few trades already go down before any significant free agent rumors, let alone actual deals?
