In this series, BFW looks back at all the members of the 2014 World Cup-winning Germany men’s national team — players and coaches — reflecting on their performance back then and checking in on where they are today. Today we have the legend who can head you and the ball in the right direction and someone who drives defenders flipping mad: Miroslav Klose
Miroslav Klose’s role in 2014
Klose made two substitute appearances in the group stage against Ghana and the USMNT, scoring against the former. In the knockout rounds, he sat out the Round
of 16 match against Algeria, but he started against France (QF), Brazil (SF), and Argentina (F).
Against Brazil, Klose scored the second goal which put him at 16 goals scored at the World Cup in all editions he’s played in (2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014), beating the great Ronaldo Nazario (or R9 Ronaldo) who was doing commentary in the stadium at the time. Klose retired from international football right after that World Cup.
What is Miroslav Klose doing now?
After ending his professional career in 2016, Klose first became an assistant coach and then the U17 coach for the German national football team up until 2020 where he moved to his former club Bayern Munich and spent one year as assistant coach to Hansi Flick.
“Salto-Klose”, as he was known because of his front flip celebration, then moved to Rheindorf Altach and then FC Nürnberg where he is currently head coach until 2028. It is also likely that the soon-to-be 48-year-old is imparting his wisdom about fair play wherever he goes.
