Barcelona have announced Frenkie de Jong has suffered a knee ligament injury and confirmed that “the player will continue treatment and medical monitoring” over the next few weeks.
The Dutchman has also spoken out about his injury, saying “at this stage there is no need for surgery” but it seems an operation has not been ruled out just yet.
A new update from Diario AS says that “the club and the player have given themselves three weeks” to assess the progress of the conservative treatment and will
then decide “whether or not to resort to surgery.”
De Jong is said to be “optimistic” he can recover without going under the knife, while Barcelona feel that surgery is the “only guarantee of a full recovery from a torn ligament.”
If De Jong does finally opt for surgery, then it’s expected he will be out of action for a total of six months.
Barcelona have of history of problems with knee injuries in recent years. Samuel Umtiti and Ansu Fati both suffered injury nightmares with knee problem, while Gavi had to undergo knee surgery last year which saw him ruled out for far longer than originally anticipated.
