BFW Commentary
There is nothing new here. It is all coming together and that is a very good thing.
In his first couple of seasons at Bayern, Upamecano was in the spotlight for a few high-profile errors. But you know what? That comes with the territory of being a center-back and even the best, most consistent players are not spared from those moments. The Frenchman did not let it faze him. He kept his head down, worked hard, and became indispensable amid of a sea of changes and ferocious competition.
Bayern fans are worried about the release clause, and understandably so is the club. They are worried because they know the cost of losing Upamecano at any point will be very high. It is a shame Bayern could not hammer this deal out earlier, but we are where we are, and the alternative — of losing Upamecano now, on a free — is considerably worse than potentially losing him after one more season and with significant compensation.
In the meantime, Bayern has time to enjoy the services of a supremely talented defender. It would not be shocking at all to see him anchor Vincent Kompany’s defense for at least two more seasons — at which point he would still have two-to-three seasons remaining.
And remember, the release clause is said to be valid starting from summer 2027. That gives Upamecano flexibility, but it does not mean he would make use of it right away. Another team would have to offer him a better opportunity and, likely, better salary. A handful of clubs are going to be able to do that and all of them should probably be trying to solve their CB situation for the long term this summer. It is far from assured that Bayern will not be Upamecano’s best bet for a long time to come.
